PERSONALITY
In a glance, Harry seems to be your average Gryffindor: brave, loyal, courageous, jumps into fights even if he doesn’t know how they’ll end but he has to do something! Also worth noting in his Gryffindor stats, he can be reckless at times (such as snooping on Draco Malfoy in his Sixth Year without knowing of the consequences), yet he’s willing to reason out usually depending on who he’s talking to (mostly *cough, cough*Hermione*cough, cough*). He can make friends easily, as he was able to make close ties with Ron at the Hogwarts Express in their First Year, and with Hermione after he and Ron saved her from being attacked by a troll. He’s fiercely protective and loyal of his friends, to make the story short. This fellow also has a clear sense of right and wrong whenever he comes across bad people or events, trying to understand the situation. He can stand up for himself, and whatever he knows is right, even people of high authority aren’t immune to his wrath, it could rub off on people in the wrong way if he isn’t being careful with what he says. He was able to shrug off being possessed by Voldemort and the Imperious Curse as a teen, and can hold his ground even at the face of ruthless school adversary, such as with the rumors of him being Syltherin’s Heir in Second Year, he managed to confront the people spewing them, in spite of the trouble these gave him.
Yet, there’s more to him to being a just regular ole’ Gryffindor. He was this close to be sent to Slytherin in his first year for various reasons: first off, he can be sneaky and clever as he can be if he wants to be. He can handle puzzles pretty decently, although he’s not as scary-smart as Hermione or has the same Wizard Chess skills as with Ron. Harry’s also pretty determined in achieving his goals (short-term and long-term alike), which is another trait associated with the Slytherin house. If he has something certain on his mind, he’ll go straight for it, no stops on end! Not to mention being so stubborn and focused on the goal. He doesn’t even mind breaking some rules to just to get the job done, which happens to him a LOT, although he does certainly knows when to back out which is, again, another Slytherin thing.
Harry has also shown resourcefulness, thinks on his feet, and makes use of the items & environment around him to get to his goals, which is also another Slytherin trademark. While he doesn’t admit it publicly, he’s quite an ambitious guy, with the main one being stopping Voldemort from screwing up the Wizarding World until he’s dead. This is also highlighted with the fact that he tends to make himself so unassuming that he never brags so much on his abilities publicly. And oh, they said Slytherins make good leaders, right? Oh, that screams Harry too, even though he wasn’t planning on being one anyway, but he does a surprisingly good job at it, as he led Dumbledore’s Army in his Fifth Year and the Gryffindor Quidditch Team in his Sixth Year.
He doesn’t take keeping secrets to remain secrets too well, essentially acting as an information sponge that everyone has to spill the beans to, although he has to learn that not every secret should be spilled out and that truth may not be open to everyone. What do you expect from someone who hates being locked out of the loop by grown-ups for so long? However, him withholding secrets from others doesn’t mean he hates or doesn’t trust someone, he only does it because he thinks this is the only way to keep them safe from harm. He can be reckless in action and thought, is stubborn as a mule, and a hot-headed & moody creature. After all, teenagers are moody creatures, although he has other problems no other teen should go through, such as people trying to kill him, so you can’t hardly blame him for acting strangely whenever something bad happens.
He has suffered depression and PTSD due to the scary combination of a terrible childhood spent with the Dursleys and having to deal with the complications that come with being the ‘Chosen One’, the madness that is the Second Wizarding War, losing many friends & allies over the years, and the heavy weight of the fame he had got from surviving the Killing Curse through his mom’s sacrifice as a baby. Because of all of this, he has fend for himself most of the time or he’ll get crushed literally and figuratively. He just wants to be seen as like any other person (or wizard for that matter): he would rather want to be remembered for his own skill sets than just his name alone.
The poor guy also has a tendency to being in the dumps and carrying the guilt that he shouldn’t be bothered with, especially when he felt responsible for Sirius’ death during his Fifth Year that he wasn’t quite sure if he had done something different to prevent it from happening. He can be very quiet and reserved, especially when he gets really moody or goes off moping, and if something bad happens or gets him off-guard or confused, he gets really more emo and brooding than, let’s say, Malfoy. And yes, he can get very judgmental at times, most especially with the Syltherin House in his early Hogwarts years, that the fact he has to deal with Colin Creevey, and even sometimes looking down on his good friend Neville at times (again this comes with the tendency of his to act unconsciously like an arrogant jerk at times), although over time with the House bias, he did open up his eyes to see more bad eggs in the other houses (including his own house) and some good Slytherins such as the case of Horace Slughorn and, yes, even Snape too. Nevertheless, he’s still a kind friendly guy who’ll be loyal to you & fight for you until the very end.
ABILITIES
Wizards and witches from the Potterverse often use wands to cast spells, incantations, curses, jinxes, patronuses, wand dueling, & charms. He’s quite adept in spellcasting, with a vast expertise in Charms, defensive magic/DADA, jinxes, wand dueling, curses (with the exception of the Killing Curse), and transfiguration (of the object and human kind). His most powerful skill in this category is being able to cast a fully corporeal stag Patronus at age 13.
Wandless Magic
Most basic form of magic, though not everyone can master it well without proper practice and control over their emotions. Harry certainly does display magic unknowingly in childhood before realizing his wizard bloodline. Thank the Lord that he was able to take full control over it once he got into Hogwarts.
Non-verbal Magic
This is considered a tricky skill to master for any wizard or witch in his world, but even at a young age, Harry does use this with and without his conscious knowledge. Usually, nonverbal magic at youth is connected to one’s emotions (stress, anger, etc.). Over time, he slowly took full control of it to the point he was intentionally using it to tidy up his Auror office in Cursed Child.
Basic Wizarding Knowledge
Thanks to his time at Hogwarts, Harry does have a hefty knowledge on any Wizarding aspect; from what we could gather from the books and films, he does have a vast know-how in Magical Creatures, Herbology, Charms, and Transfiguration, he did managed to pass Astronomy despite having one too many problems during his N.E.W.T.S at his Fifth Year. He’s also quite capable in using healing magic to heal himself and others.
Potions
While he did suck in Potions during Severus Snape’s time as the teacher of the subject, Harry did improved in Sixth Year, partially due to the Advanced Potion-Making textbook, although he was criticized for ‘cheating’ by using this book. Despite that setback, he can do a decent job in making potions, as long as Snape’s not within his vicinity.
Master of Death
While many sought after the Deathly Hallows, he’s the only one who was able to master all of them and accepted death as a part of life. Inherited the Cloak of Invisibility indirectly? Check! Getting the Resurrection Stone from Dumbledore after the latter died, hidden inside his first Golden Snitch catch? Been there, done that. Disarmed Draco Malfoy of the Elder Wand? Yeah, he did it! But out of the three though, he still plans to keep the Cloak as it’s a family heirloom, left the Elder Wand into Dumbledore’s grave (broke it into pieces in Deathly Hallows Part 2, your mileage may vary) and left the Resurrection Stone in the Forbidden Forest, lost forever.
Resourcefulness
Normally seen as a Slytherin trait, he does use his noggin to think out of the box to solve problems, thinking quickly on his feet, even though he’s clearly outclassed by Hermione’s brilliant mind. He even makes use of the environment around to overcome certain headaches, like using a Basilisk fang to destroy Tom Riddle’s diary and lying to Professor MacGonagall about visiting a frozen Hermione in the hospital wing in the second year.
Flying and Quidditch
Inherited these skills from his father, he’s shown great command over broom at his first year, which got him into the Seeker position in 1991. He would use this to his full advantage with Flying Keys, avoiding the Hungarian Horntail at the Triwizard Tournament, and getting out of the Room of Requirement when it was plagued by the Fiendfrye curse during the Battle of Hogwarts.
Apparition
While he didn’t earned a full license during the series, he did use this pretty well through much of the Horcrux Hunt.
Expert Detective Skills
While he isn’t Nancy Drew, Harry does manage to pick up on details that others may miss out pretty quickly, and while Hermione’s mainly the one who usually gathers the clues, he’s the one who starts to put all the pieces together to get the big picture, such as being able to deduce that Draco was marked with the Dark Mark even without concrete proof and noticing that Luna Lovegood wasn’t home in weeks from checking out her room.
Leadership and Teaching Skills
Harry didn’t ask to be a leader in any way, shape, or form, yet when the times get rough, he does handle the pressures of leadership pretty spot-on, knowing well that while he doesn’t find being a leader is all that great, he still has to do something and take on those responsibilities like a champ. Along with that is that with the knowledge he has gained over 7 years, he was able to help others in mastering plenty of skills, as demonstrated in giving spell tutorials to Dumbledore’s Army in Order of the Phoenix.
Indomitable Will
Even in his darkest time and while he can’t avoid depression with his terrible background, it’s clear that this guy has a will of iron. With all the deaths and losses and pain, he didn’t let all that to break him in the long run. Although this gave him a hard time to master Occlumency big time. Stubborn little shit.
Wand Versatility
How else he could get the hang of the Elder Wand pretty decent? While his wand got broken in Deathly Hallows, he did manage to use some wands without any problems associated with incompatible wand to wizard/witch matching, like ‘borrowing’ Hermione’s wand on the fly.
Parseltongue (formerly)
Thanks to being made into an unintentional Horocrux from the Attack at Godric’s Hallow by Voldemort, the poor guy had the ability to talk to snakes as early as with the snake enclosure incident pre-Hogwarts, although thankfully for him, it has been severely cut off in the end now that Voldemort’s dead.
Love
Probably the most cliché but most important theme in the series. In spite of the bad stuff happening to him, he was able to love regardless of the circumstance, willing to risk his own happiness or life to ensure that the people he loved are safe and sound.
